Mindful technology use

Educational only. This article explains a concept. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or personal advice.

Use technology on purpose

Mindful technology use starts with a simple question: what am I opening this app for? If you cannot answer that, the feed will answer it for you — usually with whatever is newest, loudest, or most likely to keep you scrolling.

Three practical habits

  • Purpose first: name the task before you open the app.
  • Active over passive: prefer replying, creating, or learning over endless scrolling and comparing, as explained in the active vs passive social media article.
  • A stopping point: decide in advance when you will stop — after a message, after a video, after a set time — rather than stopping when you feel exhausted by the feed.

Not a detox promise

This is not about quitting technology, or about willpower alone. Feeds are designed to hold attention. A small, repeatable routine — purpose, active use, stopping point — is more realistic than a perfect rule you break on day two.
